V O L A N S D R A K O N
A carnivore of immense size, this creature is the most feared across the planet and even throughout the closest solar systems. Rather than the serpentine body of the eastern dragons on Earth, this animal rather resembles a crocodilian, though its snout is far shorter in comparison. The muzzle is stout and is bluntly rounded, though it makes this reptilian no less dangerous. It has a full set of jagged teeth set in two rows along both the bottom and top jaws. Growing up to one hundred and seventy feet in length, it is vastly larger than Earth's largest animal: the Blue Whale. When standing up to full height, its chin may be thirty feet up in the air and often times even higher. They can weigh up to seven hundred tons. For comparison, the Blue Whale can weigh around one hundred and seventy tons.
Thick bony plates protect its hide, though there are several weak points that can be utilized for hunting purposes. The crux between the animal's jaw and neck has a fleshy throat flap which can be penetrated by traditional weapons. While the underbelly of the Volans Drakon is the most heavily protected part of its body, there is a small spot measuring about five feet in diameter at the back of its skull where the bone does not fuse to form a full casing. Here, a sharp implement can be stabbed for an instant death blow. However, reaching these weak points calls for more than just bull-headed bravery. These huge animals are far faster than they appear and can easily snap up someone or even a whole vehicle in no time at all.
Volans Drakon are literally named "flying fish dragon." This is due to a sexual dimorphic characteristic in males along the sides of their heads. A decorative fleshy 'wing,' as it were, may be expanded to create the appearance similar to a flying fish's pectoral fins in flight. These adaptations do not allow for flight.
In the way of several animals of Earth, Volans Drakon are easy to sex from far off. Besides the decorative wings along their heads, the males come in vibrant colors - usually of striking blue, green, and yellow. Their bodies have vertical stripes of alternating blue and green along their plates while a thin horizontal yellow line runs the length of their body along each side. Females are usually a pale brown or white to help them better blend in with the sandy environment.
